You qualify for Social Security benefits by earning CREDITS when you work and pay Social Security taxes.
These CREDITS are based on the amount of your earnings each year you work.
To qualify for Social Security Retirement benefits you must have 40 credits or 10 years of work.
In 2016, you receive one credit for $1,260 of earnings, up to a maximum of four credits per year.
